About This Trek

Social innovation and social entrepreneurship have moved from the fringes to being an important part of the conversation when it comes to solving some of the world’s biggest challenges. This is particularly true in emerging markets.
Spend your winter break doing something meaningful. Meet with and learn from social entrepreneurs in Peru, equip yourself with tools to drive social impact yourself, and experience all that Peru has to offer.
Through Emzingo’s Live-Learn-Lead™ framework, this immersive experience will look to challenge, inspire, and transform you.

  • Experience field visits to social entrepreneurs and NGOs doing amazing things in and around Lima.
  • Immerse yourself in the culture of Lima, Cuzco, and Machu Picchu while spending time with classmates and students from other U.S. universities.

  • Interact with experts in social innovation, sustainability, leadership, and cultural awareness.
  • Engage in dynamic workshops, powerful discussion, and idea generation that will help you pursue a career in social impact or even start your own social enterprise.

  • Return equipped with new skills and tools you can apply on-campus, in your academic project work, and in future internships or full-time jobs.
  • Arrive back on campus with an understanding of what it takes to create or run a social enterprise.

What’s in it for you…

  • Apply skills learned in the classroom on a real world case within a challenging environment

  • Have a positive impact, and understand how to apply social innovation in your own communities

  • Collaborate with fellow students to develop your personal leadership skills

  • Have a unique cultural immersion into one of the key markets of Latin America

Sample Activities*

Discovering Peru

  • Tour the ancient buildings of Lima’s colonial center with Alternative Peru, an eco-tourism social enterprise focused on authentic intercultural experiences that bring travelers to places beyond the traditional sights.
  • Understand Peru’s recent history: visit the Yuyanapac photo-exibition, a touching collection of black & white pictures that re-construct the tragic recent years of terrorism and Fujimori’s dictatorship.

Social Entrepreneurship

  • Take part in an interactive workshop to define social entrepreneurship and explore how business skills and passion have the potential to unlock solutions for the world’s most pressing issues.

Academic Learning

  • Learn about micro-credit and the challenges that entrepreneurs face when accessing finance in emerging markets.
  • Learn to use the Business Model Canvas for Social Enterprise Design and work in small groups to start imagining new ideas to address social issues or challenges you have observed.
  • Take part in the final part of the Social Innovation Workshop: work in mixed teams and design a business model that offers innovative solutions for the chosen community challenge.

Immersion Experiences

  • Visit social enterprises doing amazing work with women and youth in Villa el Salvador, a low-income district in the outskirts of Lima. Learn to walk on stilts and play the Cajón Peruano with local youth at Arena y Esteras and end the day getting to know the women of Puriy, where you will learn about a simple idea that has helped them turn their lives around.
  • Learn about the operational challenges involved in bringing reliable sanitation to areas with no access to water or sewage systems. We will talk to X-runner’s staff on the ground and their customers in Pamplona, one of Lima’s most recent shanty towns.

And there’s more!
