This month’s featured partner is The Giant Flag, a social enterprise listed by CNN as one of the Top 10 Ideas to change the World. The Giant Flag is a green innovation legacy project created to celebrate the spirit of South Africa by building a giant national flag made up of millions of colored desert plants and a four-megawatt solar field.
Viewable from space, and the size of 66 soccer fields, the Giant Flag will claim its place as a new model of economic stimulus by encouraging economic growth, job creation, clean energy and green tourism in the arid Camdeboo region of South Africa.
It’s four megawatt solar field is expected to power more than 4000 homes in the area, while the millions of succulents and cacti planted to create the Flag, will play an active part in combating climate change by bringing back rich and diverse plant life to a currently barren area, reintroducing nutrients to the soil, and actively helping to offset approximately 200 tons of carbon a year.
Emzingo has recently partnered with The Giant Flag. In this collaboration, Emzingo SIL fellows will help the organization create an updated business model development and implementation plan, working directly with project founder, Guy Lieberman, and project lead, Katie Andrews in South Africa.
